Pumping 101: How to Find Your Perfect Flange Fit (And Why It Matters)

For many parents, a breast pump is an essential tool in their infant feeding toolkit. Whether you are exclusively pumping, building a backup stash, or preparing to return to work, pumping allows you to maintain your milk supply and provide for your baby while maintaining flexibility.

However, many parents unpack their brand-new pump, attach the parts that came in the box, and assume that’s all there is to it. It often comes as a surprise to learn that the plastic, funnel-shaped pieces that press against your breast—known as flanges—are not one-size-fits-all. Using the wrong size flange can turn an otherwise smooth pumping session into an uncomfortable or inefficient chore.

Every family and every body is entirely unique. Finding your perfect flange fit is a simple step that can completely transform your pumping experience.

Why Flange Fit Matters

Your breast pump relies on a delicate balance of suction and cycle speed to mimic a baby’s natural nursing pattern. If your flange doesn’t fit the unique geometry of your anatomy, it disrupts this mechanical handshake.

Using an improperly sized flange generally leads to two major issues:

  • Decreased Milk Output: A poorly fitted flange compresses the underlying milk ducts rather than stimulating them. This prevents the pump from draining the breast tissue effectively, which can inadvertently signal to your body to slow down milk production.
  • Tissue Discomfort and Damage: If a flange is too small or too large, the friction can cause significant rubbing, swelling, blistered nipples, and elastic tissue damage. Pumping should feel like a firm tugging or pulling sensation—it should never be painful.

How to Check Your Current Fit

The best way to evaluate your flange size is to watch what happens inside the clear plastic tunnel while the pump is actively running on a comfortable suction level.

  • Signs of a Perfect Fit: Your nipple moves freely back and forth down the center of the tunnel. It shouldn’t rub against the plastic walls, and very little to none of your surrounding areola (the darker skin around your nipple) should be pulled into the tunnel with it.
  • Signs It’s Too Small: Your nipple rubs firmly or scrapes against the sides of the plastic tunnel. You might notice your nipple turning white, becoming pinched, or feeling a friction burn during or after the session.
  • Signs It’s Too Large: A significant amount of your areola tissue is being sucked down into the tunnel alongside your nipple. This can cause the tissue to swell, blocking the milk rings and leaving your breasts feeling heavy and full even after a long pumping session.

How to Measure Your Anatomy

Breast pump flanges are measured in millimeters (mm), and the size corresponds directly to the diameter of your nipple base—not your overall bra cup size.

To find your baseline, you can use a simple millimeter ruler or a downloadable circular sizing tool. Measure the diameter of the nipple base itself (the part that juts out), excluding the areola. Because your tissue expands under vacuum suction, you generally want to select a flange size that is roughly 2mm to 3mm larger than your pre-pump measurement.

Keep in mind that it is incredibly common to need a different size for each side, and your flange size can actually change over the course of your postpartum journey as your body adapts.
